COAL MINING IN NIGER
CFG, under the terms of its exclusive Partnership with the Government of Niger is currently in “on going negotiations” with a designated Ad Hoc Committee specifically set up to pin point certain concessions the Government would particularly like to develop through the offices of CFGNiger. Once the concessions have been selected, CFG will be actively looking for Investors/Joint venture Partners to develop the concessions. Other routes to fund the exploration of the concessions are also being considered including public offerings and the formation of private individual/institutions funding vehicles or funds.
The Société Nigerienne de Charbon d’Anour-Araren (SONICHAR) currently operates the Anour Araren opencast coal operation in the western parts of Air Massif in north central Niger. The quality of the coal is low, but suitable for local on site power generation for use on nearby uranium mines. The coal mine has reserves estimated at 9.1 Mt, producing 18,291 t of coal (reported 2002).
Niger’s total coal resources have been estimated at containing 13.7 Mt of coal but these are just estimated and based on old reporting.
To our knowledge, there are no other operational coal pits/mines in Niger at present although there is a huge internal demand for coal in Niger and also naturally for export.
